BAT CARE AND PREPARATION
Caring for your cricket bat is crucial to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Most bats come equipped with a scuff sheet designed to maintain moisture levels and resist surface wear during play. When it's time to replace the sheet, typically between seasons, follow these guidelines for proper care:
OILING THE BLADE
Apply two light coats of oil if leaving the bat natural, or one light coat if fitting another sheet.
Use approximately half a teaspoon of oil for each coat, rubbing it into the face and edges with a cloth.
Leave for 24-48 hours face up after applying between coats or fitting a new scuff sheet.
Wipe away any excess surface oil with a cloth before using the bat or fitting a scuff sheet.
SKUFF SHEET REMOVAL
Warm the sheet with a hairdryer to loosen adhesive before removal.
Peel the sheet across the face evenly to minimize lifting of willow fibres.
Avoid pulling up the blade when removing the sheet.
Consider lightly sanding the blade before oiling or fitting new sheets.
OILING EXPOSED WILLOW
Lightly oil the exposed willow on the rear of the blade for moisture maintenance.
Apply with caution to prevent contact with labels, as oil may undermine label adhesive.
PRE-MATCH PREPARATION
Before match use, perform knocking in to ensure the bat's readiness.
Test the blade against an old used ball in a light net session.
If the face blemishes or dents easily, apply further knocking in as needed.
